During the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the Manitoba Arts Council reviewed 1,384 grant applications, up from 1,191 in 2022-2023. Of these applications, 45% were successful. The total requested amount was $18.66 million, and $11.05 million was awarded.
Why have applications increased by 30% in four years? We believe that there is a combination of factors:
- The arts and cultural community in Manitoba is changing and growing, as is Manitoba’s population.
- When MAC delivered extraordinary pandemic-related support on behalf of the government of Manitoba in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, more artists and organizations became aware of MAC programs.
- MAC’s outreach efforts to communities that are historically underrepresented in MAC’s grant results are having an impact.
This report first breaks down the grants that were made by applicant type, granting program, and region. Next, we present a summary of granting for individual applicants in different priority and age groups. Last, we offer an overview of the peer assessors who reviewed applications during the 2023-2024 year.
The rescinded applications in 2023-24 include applications from the same fiscal year and previous fiscal years. The rescinded amount is used to award applications that were declined with merit in the 2023-2024 fiscal year.
In 2023-24, 19 applications were rescinded (fully or partially) for a total of $42,293. As a result, we were able to award 7 applications that were previously declined with merit, for a total of $62,739.
