September – April, 2013

Over the past 15 years the Sagkeeng Anicinabe High School has brought musician and songwriter , Sister Dorothy to their community. Over the years she has worked with the students to create 2 CDs and music videos of songs written in both English and Ojibwe.

In September 2013, Sister Dorothy began a 10 week Artists in the Schools residency with 30 senior students taking drama and music classes. Over the course of the school year, Sister Dorothy worked with students to create a musical in Objibwae.

“We rehearsed a lot and it really paid off. We booked a performance tour including Wanipigow, Little Black River, Brokenhead, Walter Whyte, Powerview, Sagkeeng Junior High, Daycare and personal Care Home. The Students did really well with the performances and also behind the scenes.”… Sister Dorothy

The students were extremely proud of the work they had created and that they had performed in Objibwae for their community. “I’m learning my language!” … student, Sagkeeng Anicinabe High School

The school plans to continue the music group created through the residency as way of fostering the work and development of young songwriters, musicians, and playwrights within their community.
