Cameron Forbes at Hapnot Collegiate
Artist in the Schools Residency Program
February 11-15, 2013
The city and youth of Flin Flon came together to build a skate park in their community with a grant from the Aviva Fund in 2011. Then in 2013, Hapnot Collegiate was awarded an Artists in the Schools residency to have visual artist, Cam Forbes, work with the students in grades 9 – 12 to create a 40ft mural that would be mounted on the north side of the new skate park. The students were excited to be able to contribute to a project that would be a part of their community for years to come.
Under the guidance of Cam, the students came up with a web of creative ideas that led them to the mural’s theme -BIKE, RUN, and SKATE. The words dart across the mural and were chosen to reflect the action at the new skate park.
“The students were so engaged with the project that when the power went off on Thursday almost all of the students stayed to work on their finishing touches.”… Karen Clark (teacher, Hapnot Collegiate)
The cooperation and perseverance of the students are testament to the fact that they were able to finish a huge mural in only 5 days!
