Do you believe that the arts have a place in learning?
Are you convinced that there are different ways to learn?
Can the arts serve as a tool for learning?
If the answer is YES to any one of these, perhaps an ArtsSmarts project is for you!
ArtsSmarts supports the collaboration of schools and local artists to develop projects that integrate art activities into non-arts subject areas. Young people combine their learning of subjects such as math, languages, social studies and science with one or more artistic disciplines, such as visual and literary arts, dance, music, and theatre. Artists and educators work as collaborative teams, using one or more artistic discipline as a tool for creative, hands-on learning of core curriculum, during the regular school day. Projects can involve one class, several classes, one whole school, or several schools. Projects may involve one or more local, professional artist of the school’s choosing.
ArtsSmarts I (developmental grants) $100 – $1,000 : Proposals are accepted for the current school year at any time, at least 4 weeks prior to start of project.
ArtsSmarts II (long-term projects) $1,000 – $10,000: Requests for funding of projects in the following school year are due by April 15th.
The program is intended to achieve the following goals:
- to encourage artists and teachers to work in partnership to integrate the arts into the teaching of core curriculum, e.g., Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, etc.
- to provide in-depth arts experiences, engaging students and teachers in the creative process
- to provide teachers with professional development related to the arts
