What is the intention of this program?
The Arts Leaders program is intended to support the development of leadership skills and leadership opportunities for Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour arts practitioners in Manitoba. The program has the broad goal of seeing more Indigenous, Black and People of Colour in senior leadership positions in the arts.
I really want to participate. How can I find a leadership training opportunity?
MAC will be providing information sessions in early 2021. Please contact us if you would like to participate.
I’ve never applied for a grant before. How do I get started?
Welcome! We are glad to see you here. We have created some video tutorials to guide you through the granting process.
- Step 1: Create your MAC Profile
- Step 2: Start an Application
- Step 3: Submit you Application
I’ve written a draft of my application. How do I know if I’m on the right track?
MAC Program Consultants can review your application with you before you submit it. Contact us to schedule a consultation.
Does this program support creating new artistic works or works in process?
No. Funding through this program is not meant for the creation of artistic works. MAC supports art creation in two other programs: Create and Indigenous 360 – Create.
I want to lead an art project. Does that qualify for this grant?
No. Applicants should be in a “learning” situation that expands their abilities and/or opportunities to lead.
Who can apply to this grant?
I’ve never thought of myself as a professional artist, but I’ve been involved in traditional arts practices for a long time. Would I be eligible to apply?
Yes. You can apply as an Arts/Cultural Professional or an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper.
I am going to be working with a mentor. Should my mentor apply?
No, the application should come from the learner, not the mentor. However you will be asked to provide information about your mentor in the application.
I’d like to do an internship with an organization. Can the organization apply for funding to pay me?
No. The application should come from you, the intern. But you can include living expenses in your project budget to cover your costs during your internship.
How much can I claim as a living wage?
The rate of a living wage changes based on where you live and your family circumstances. For more information, please refer to the following websites:
- Centre for Policy Alternatives: https://policyfix.ca/2020/12/03/living-wage-for-manitoba-2020/
- Living Wage Canada: http://livingwagecanada.ca/index.php/living-wage-communities/manitoba/
If my application is successful, does the funding come to me or does it go to the organization I will be working with?
Funding will be issued to the individual applicant.
The training I would like to take is not in Manitoba. Is that allowed?
Yes. Your learning experience does not have to take place in Manitoba, but you, the applicant, must be a Manitoba resident.
I’m already in a leadership training situation right now, can I apply to this program?
Yes, you may apply for funding to extend your current leadership training but you cannot apply for expenses incurred before you submit your application.
When can I begin my project?
You can begin your project anytime after you submit your application. However, you run the risk of incurring expenses before knowing if your application is successful.
How long can my project last?
Up to 18 months.
I’m not sure if all the costs of my project are eligible. What should I do?
Contact our Program Consultants and they can advise you on what to include in your budget.
