Karel Funk – 2013 Deep Bay Artists’ Residency

Karel Funk is a Winnipeg artist who graduated from Columbia University with a Master in Fine Arts in 2003. He has had three solo shows at 303 Gallery in New York and two solo museum shows and has participated in various group shows. Funk’s  work has been purchased by the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Residency project

While in residence, Karel will be working on one acrylic portrait in a series that explores voyeurism in contemporary urbanism. Karel’s life-size portraits are painted on wooden panels, using a subjective glazing technique of thin layers that is inspired by traditional Renaissance portraiture. The painting will be included in his next solo show.
