Daniel Koulack – 2015 Deep Bay Artists’ Residency

Daniel’s music can be heard on his two albums of original instrumental music for five string banjo Clawhammer Your Way To The Top, and Life On A String. Both of these recordings were nominated for Juno s in the Best Roots/Traditional category.

Residency Project: During his stay at Deep Bay Daniel will be writing new music for the five string banjo.

Meet the Artist: Friday August 28th at 2 p.m. at the Lawn Bowling Greens. At the meet the artist event, Daniel will play both brand new and old compositions for the banjo, and will discuss the unique properties of the 5 string banjo as well as his own “artistic process”.…

Vincent Ho – 2015 Major Arts Grant Recipient

Vincent Ho is a Canadian composer. Born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1975, Vincent Ho began his musical training through the Royal Conservatory of Music. He received his Associate Diploma in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) in 1993, his Bachelor of Music from the University of Calgary in 1998, his Master of Music degree from the University of Toronto in 2000, and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California in 2005. Since his appointment to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra as composer-in-residence in 2007, Ho has presented a number of large-scale works that have generated excitement and critical praise.…

Chantel Emond, alias french press, est une auteure-compositrice indie-pop qui recueille présentement du matériel pour son premier disque. Née à Winnipeg, elle a d’abord étudié le chant jazz à Toronto pour lancer sa carrière, où elle a formé le groupe The O’Darling, avec lequel elle a fait des tournées dans tout le pays. Après ses études en musique, Chantel a voyagé à l’étranger et a chanté sur des scènes thaïlandaises et marocaines. Kenneth Nichols est arrivé au Brandon College il y a 50 ans pour enseigner le piano, la théorie musicale et la méthode Carl Orff pour les enfants. Il a écrit environ 70 œuvres musicales de divers genres, y compris trois opéras. Il a enseigné la musique en Chine de 2005 à 2007. Présentement professeur émérite à l’Université de Brandon, il continue de vivre à Brandon.

Projet de stage : À l’aide d’un clavier électronique, le compositeur arrangera des chansons d’enfant pour la voix et le piano en s’inspirant du livre de chansons mennonites Liederbuch für Kinder.…

Chantel Emond (aka french press) is an indie-pop songwriter currently gathering material for her debut album. This Winnipeg-born artist first began her career studying jazz vocals in Toronto, where she also formed The O’Darling, a band with whom she toured throughout the country. After completing her studies in music, Chantel travelled overseas, singing on stages in Thailand and Morocco. Upon her return to Canada, she settled back into her hometown, where she is busy developing her musical catalogue and performing.

Residency Project : During her stay at the Deep Bay cabin, Chantel will write new songs and continue to shape works-in-progress for her debut album.…

Randolph Peters – 2012 Major Arts Grant

Winnipeg-born Randolph Peters has been a professional freelance composer for 34 years. He has written operas; symphonies; choral, chamber and dance music; as well as soundtracks for film, television, theatre and radio. Peters has served as Composer-in-Residence for both the Canadian Opera Company and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with authors such as Robertson Davies, Margaret Atwood, and Salman Rushdie, amongst many others.
