SARAH CRAWLEY
VISUAL ARTIST

Sarah Crawley has had her photographic work presented across Canada in solo and group exhibitions and is an active member of the visual art community in Winnipeg.

RESIDENCY PROJECT

Sarah will spend two weeks photographing the woods around the Deep Bay cabin by making overnight exposures with pinhole cameras. Working with up to a dozen cameras at a time, she will experiment with the effect of camera placement on the resulting image as she explores the voyeuristic aspect and inherent slowness of the process and the tension created through the use of old and new technology.

JOSHUA PEARLMAN
VISUAL ARTIST

Joshua Pearlman is a botanist and visual artist who sees the exploration of questions to be the common purpose to both artistic and scientific activity. His art practice has taken him from Cape Dorset, Nunavut to Tel Aviv, Israel and has exhibited work at Platform Gallery, the St. Norbert Arts Centre, the Ottawa Art Gallery, and has been published in Above and Beyond magazine.

RESIDENCY PROJECT

Joshua combines a background in science with his art practice. During his residency, he will be constructing a large-scale installation that will be suspended from the ceiling of the studio building behind the Deep Bay cabin. Joshua is exploring the contradiction between our human need for individual identity and our role as members of a larger population, community, and landscape. The installation that he will be working on will serve as the prototype for an exhibition in 2012.

Jamie Wright graduated with an MFA from the Glasgow School of Art and received a BFA Honours from the University Of Manitoba School Of Art. He considers himself to be primarily a drawer and his work is often very large-scale. He is currently Gallery Coordinator for aceartinc. in Winnipeg.

RESIDENCY PROJECT

Jamie creates hunting trophies inspired by the taxidermy animals common in bars and lodges throughout Canada. However, his trophies reflect an urban hunter in the age of the internet. Jamie tracks down his prey in the back alleys of cities and draws images of carnivores on to the leather using pen, ink and gouache.

Heather Komus was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and earned her Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Manitoba. Heather is a mixed media artist working with various materials such as embroidery, handmade paper, hair and pig intestine. Her work stems from an interest in biology, particularly entomology. She has exhibited in Winnipeg in solo and group shows.

RESIDENCY PROJECT

During her residency, Heather will investigate the ecosystems of Riding Mountain Park. She will create a series of unique embroideries on pig intestine that will explore the role of parasitism and the microscopic in an ecosystem. With a deep interest in biology Heather’s work focuses on the microscopic to magnify those moments that make us, as humans, feel small. After all, there are more creatures in the soil of your average football field than there are humans on the planet.

Kevin Lee Burton is an award winning director, programmer and editor. He trained at the all Aboriginal Indigenous Independent Digital Filmmaking Program in North Vancouver, BC. Kevin works in Cree, his ancestral language, and his films have been shown at the ImagineNATIVE Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, and the Toronto International Film Festival. Kevin is Swampy Cree and originally from God’s Lake Narrows First Nation in Manitoba, Canada.

RESIDENCY PROJECT

Kevin is completing a film script set in a landscape similar to Clear Lake where one of the characters is deceased. He is exploring the possibility of evoking spirit in a film by using sound to create a tangible character. Kevin’s residency will allow him to open his ears and become grounded into the calmness that is the tone and pacing of this story.

RODNEY LATOURELLE
INSTALLATION ARTIST

Rodney LaTourelle is an installation artist who draws simultaneously from the fields of art and architecture, examining the affective relationship between colour, spatial arrangements, and the viewer’s experience. He has shown in numerous exhibitions internationally and was included in the recent Canadian Biennial at the National Gallery of Canada.

PROJECT:
Installation for Winnipeg Now exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery

For the upcoming exhibition, LaTourelle will create an installation that concentrates on the psycho-geography of Winnipeg itself. The labyrinthine construction will choreograph a displacement between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ using tonal variations of white and raw plywood, focusing on a sense of interiority that fluctuates between zones of inaccessibility and harsh physicality.
