Arlene Minkhorst – Deep Bay 2014

Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) School Director

Arlene is a graduate of the National Ballet School and RWB School Professional Division. She has guest-taught and adjudicated for dance festivals and competitions across Canada and the United States, and has been a jury member for the Youth America Grand Prix (New York), the Prix de Lausanne, and the Japan Grand Prix.

Residency project: Arlene and Johanne will be working on completing curriculum documents for the RWB School. Fundamental to the success of the school is the development of curriculum that clearly outlines the methods adapted by the RWB.…

Dominique Rey – 2014 Deep Bay Artists’ Residency

VISUAL ARTIST

Dominique is a multidisciplinary artist working in photography, painting, performance, and installation. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and the United States, Germany, and Slovakia. She holds a MFA from Bard College, New York, and the Transart Institute in Berlin.

Residency project: Dominique’s most recent work, a video-based piece entitled Erlking, is drawn from the German myth of the Erlkönig and investigates the notion of the unconscious other within ourselves. While at the Deep Bay cabin, she will explore where the Erlking might reside in the natural landscape of the park, creating temporary installations to record on film and in photographs.…

Evin Collis – 2014 Deep Bay Artists’ Residency

VISUAL ARTIST

Evin holds a BFA from the Ontario College of Art & Design and has completed an internship at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy. He lives in Winnipeg, where he divides his time between working on the railroad and making art.

Residency project: While in Riding Mountain, Evin plans to wander through the park, by canoe and on foot, to scout out areas of interest to sketch and photograph. The images captured during these excursions will then inform his work as he begins a new series of large oil paintings. These paintings will examine Canada’s relationship with history, colonialism, industry, and the physical environment.…

Daniel Koulack – 2014 Deep Bay Artists’ Residency

MUSICIAN

At the age of 11, Daniel bought a banjo with money saved from his paper route. A year later, he made his professional debut at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Daniel has toured extensively as the guitarist and mandolinist with Finjan and is also the bassist with Klezmer ensembles Black Sea Station and From Both Ends of the Earth. Both his albums of original music, Clawhammer Your Way to the Top and Life on a String, were nominated for Juno awards. Daniel’s music has also been used to underscore theatre, film, and television productions.

Residency project: Daniel will focus his residency on the creation of new compositions for five-string banjo, which will be arranged for various instruments including bass, soprano and alto saxophone, clarinet, flute, violin, and percussion.…

WRITER, CURATOR, AND ARTIST

An active writer, curator, and artist, J.J. Kegan McFadden has exhibited and published his work throughout Canada and beyond since receiving his Master’s degree in Critical and Curatorial Studies from the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia. McFadden is currently on a one-year research leave from his position as Director/Curator of PLATFORM Centre for Photographic + Digital Arts.

Residency  project: During his research leave from PLATFORM Centre for Photographic+ Digital  Arts, McFadden will be researching and categorizing a ‘school’ of contemporary photography indicative of the work produced by Winnipeg artists over the last 30 years.…

Shannon Leitch – 2013 Deep Bay Artists’ Residency

Shannon Leitch received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hawai’i and her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Regina. Residing in Brandon, she continues to work in two-dimensional media. Shannon’s work has been featured in Honolulu Magazine and Studio Visit Magazine.

Residency project: During her time at Deep Bay, Shannon will be working on a series of mixed-media drawings titled Gathering Myself. Shannon will hike daily through Riding Mountain National Park, sketching and photographing the landscape. These images will provide the visual database for her series examining how an individual’s identity is shaped and influenced by their surroundings.…

Diana Thorneycroft has exhibited various bodies of work across Canada, the United States, and Europe, as well as in Moscow, Tokyo, and Sydney. Since 2005, she has been making photographs that focus on Canadian history and identity. Thorneycroft’s series Group of Seven Awkward Moments has been exhibited at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the Carleton University Art Gallery, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, The Reach Museum Gallery (Abbotsford), the Art Gallery of Windsor ,and the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris. Her current exhibition, A People’s History, has been shown at the Art Gallery of Calgary, Art Mûr (Montreal), and the Art Gallery of Regina.…
