Danielle Sturk – 2015 Major Arts Grant Recipient

Danielle Sturk is a multi-disciplinary dance artist, choreographer, and independent filmmaker creating in documentary and experimental forms. Since 2004, her combined short films have been screened at over thirty film festivals and broadcast on CBC, Radio Canada, Aboriginal People’s Television Network, MTS TV, l’Office national du film du Canada (NFB), TVA (Quebec), and TFO (Télévision française de l’Ontario). Danielle began her career as a dance artist and choreographer, performing nationally and internationally from 1986-1997. A graduate of the University of Winnipeg’s Theatre/Film department, Danielle is based in her home town of Winnipeg with her partner and their four daughters, where she continues to mine inspiration from her immediate surroundings with their support.…

Tanja Woloshen – 2015 Churchill Artists’ Residency

Tanja Woloshen is the artist-in-residence at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre (CNSC) June 24 – July 8, 2015. Tanja is a dance artist and educator whose creative practice explores transformation and inclusive ways of seeing. In 2013, Tanja debuted a half-length dance work, Encounters of the Man Kind, a mythopoetic investigation of men and intimacy, inviting audiences to look at the relations between space and the body. Tanja’s current work explores the human relationship with nature and intrinsic wildness. Recent projects also include dancing for Lise McMillan, Sarah Anne Johnson, Jolene Bailie, Natasha Torres Garner, and Mia Van Leeuwen.

Janelle Hacault – 2015 Deep Bay Artists’ Residency

janelle-hacaultThe Artist: Janelle is a professional contemporary dance artist and an educator based in Winnipeg. From Flin Flon, Manitoba, she is a graduate of the Senior Professional Program of the School of Contemporary Dancers and holds a BA Honours from the University of Winnipeg. Janelle is co-founder of TheDancePost.org and co-founder/general manager of Nova Dance Collective.

Residency Project: Janelle will be researching movement for a new contemporary dance piece alongside her dancer/collaborator, Hilary Crist, exploring the struggle of confronting oneself. Since the passing of her mother in 2012, Janelle’s obsession with the afterlife and the question of who we really are and where we are headed has haunted her.…

Alexandra Elliott – 2014 Deep Bay Artists’ Residency

Alexandra is a contemporary dancer and choreographer. She studied at the School of Contemporary Dancers from the age of four years until she graduated in 2004 from the company’s Professional Program and the University of Winnipeg with a BA Honours degree. Alexandra was a company dancer with Ruth Cansfield Dance Company for four years before joining Young Lungs Dance Exchange to pursue choreography. She is now the artistic director of her own company, Alexandra Elliott Dance.

Residency project: Alexandra will work on developing a 15-minute dance piece entitled Get Served. In this work, she will be depicting seven specific customers she used to serve in restaurants where she worked.…

Treasure Waddell – 2014 Deep Bay Artists’ Residency

Treasure is a dancer, teacher, choreographer, yoga teacher, and pranassage practitioner who hails from Winnipeg. As a dance artist, she performed for 11 years with the Ruth Cansfield Dance Company. She has also danced in the works of Karen Kuzak for TRIP Dance Company, Christina Medina for @tendance, Ali Robson, Brianna Stark, Rachel Browne, and in her own choreography. Her recent choreography includes In Sight Of and Ordinary Acts.

 

Residency project: Treasure will be working on her new dance piece based on the character and stories of Pippi Longstocking. During her residency, Treasure will be joined by dancer Ali Robson, who dances the role of Pippi.…

Johanne Gingras – 2014 Deep Bay Artists’ Residency

RWB School Teacher Training Program Director

Johanne is a graduate of the National Ballet School Teacher Training Program and joined the RWB School in 1984. She holds Licentiate teaching qualifications with the Cecchetti Society of Canada and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. As a choreographer, Joanne has created numerous pieces for the RWB School’s Professional Division and has also choreographed several productions for the Manitoba Opera Association. She is highly sought-after as an international guest teacher.

Residency project: Arlene and Johanne will be working on completing curriculum documents for the RWB School. Fundamental to the success of the school is the development of curriculum that clearly outlines the methods adapted by the RWB.…

Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) School Director

Arlene is a graduate of the National Ballet School and RWB School Professional Division. She has guest-taught and adjudicated for dance festivals and competitions across Canada and the United States, and has been a jury member for the Youth America Grand Prix (New York), the Prix de Lausanne, and the Japan Grand Prix.
